Mature plants may freely self-seed in the landscape if seed pods are not removed prior to splitting open. The plant grows easily from seed, but expect that it will take two to three years to establish and produce flowers. It is drought tolerant, moderately salt tolerant, and does well in poor, dry soils. The plant is easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun. The plant is upright, typically growing in clumps 1 to 3 feet tall, and is found in dry, rocky open woods, glades, prairies, fields, and roadsides. Unlike many of the other milkweeds, this species does not have milky-sapped stems. The species name, tuberosa, refers to the root. Its Latin genus name, Asclepias, honors the Greek god of medicine, Asklepios.
